Job Title: Assistive & Instructional Technology Coordinator


Job Summary:

The Mission of the Office of Disability Services (DS) at Idaho State University (ISU) is to increase access to all programs and services sponsored or funded by the University. ISU strives to improve the usability of its websites and other University systems and software, ensuring they are accessible and can be used by individuals of all abilities. In support of our accessibility initiatives and under the direction of the Director for Disability Services at ISU, the incumbent is responsible for leading teams and committees, providing training, advocacy, program oversight and technical assistance to the campus community and implementing Universal Design Learning (UDL) principles across all ISU programs and campuses, in accordance with the American’s with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA) and Sections 504 & 508 of the Rehabilitation Act as Amended. The incumbent will also be responsible for coordinating and assisting with the development and implementation of strategies designed to improve accessibility of the University’s web pages and related content in compliance with applicable laws and institutional standards. Further, the incumbent will assess, develop and manage assistive technology, alternative format and accessibility needs for students, faculty and staff with disabilities and those participating in University sponsored events and programs. This entails managing the document conversion process (print to Braille or electronic etc.); managing the Dorothy Broyles Assistive Technology Lab and supervising temporary and student staff working in the lab, providing individualized assistive technology and alternative format training to the campus community and providing leadership and expertise to the ISU campus regarding the removal of barriers and the use of assistive technology and alternative formats.


Provide assistance to the Web Manager by applying knowledge of web design and accessibility; Assist with website auditing and reporting efforts in accordance with WCAG 2.0 AA and other applicable guidelines; Assist with the development of a training plan and provide training and support to web content editors and developers; Manage, maintain, and update the DS website using knowledge of web design; Work with the ISU community to ensure equal access of our LMS and media and create and evaluate accessibility of documents, web pages, and PDF's; Conduct usability tests for compliance applicable laws, make recommendations; Participate in the procurement processes to ensure the University is purchasing accessible programs, software and systems; Develop and manage a document conversion program and manage all alternative text requests, acquisitions, conversions, distribution, data as well as recruit, train and supervise student and temporary employees for the program; Assess assistive technology needs, research, test and recommend appropriate and cost effective solutions to ensure equal access and train users on recommended technology programs including, but not limited to; Read & Write Gold, Dragon Naturally Speaking, Livescribe Pens and alternative apps; Provide leadership in the area of accessibility, alternative formats and assistive technology and function as a main resource for the campus and the community by delivering presentations and professional development activities regarding varying assistive technology topics to faculty, staff and community partners; Lead and serve on a variety of committees; Supervise and maintain the Dorothy Broyles AT Lab including equipment, software, hardware and furniture; Install and configure accessible software on DS lab computers; Assist IT with the installation and configuration of accessible software on campus lab computers; Administer DS assistive technology site license agreements.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • •                    Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent work experience;
  • •                    Demonstrated knowledge of World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standards for websites, Section 508 Standards and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0
  • •                    Knowledgeable and sensitive to the needs of individuals with disabilities, strong attention to detail, proven experience managing complex assignments and meeting required deadlines;
  • •                    Exhibit strong communication skills;
  • •                    Demonstrated ability to supervise support staff;
  • •                    Demonstrated ability to lead teams and work in groups;
  • •                    Demonstrated ability to effectively interpret, organize and present information and ideas orally and in writing, and proficiency with the Microsoft Office software suite.
