Dr. Chareen Snelson has recently published a chapter called, The Benefits and Challenges of YouTube as an Educational Resource, in a book called The Routledge Companion on Media Education, Copyright and Fair Use. This book contains a selection of practical educator-oriented chapters written by experts in media literacy and copyright education. The book was edited by Dr. Renee Hobbs, who is an internationally-recognized authority on digital and media literacy education. Dr. Snelson's chapter delves into a brief history of YouTube in education, challenges related to copyright issues on YouTube, and some of the benefits of YouTube for educators and students. The chapter includes practical advice for educators who are interested in how YouTube can be used to teach media literacy competencies so that students are better prepared to access, analyze, evaluate, and create online video, which is critical in 21st Century education. The information in this chapter was drawn from more than a decade of teaching an online course called YouTube for Educators, which is offered through the Educational Technology Program at Boise State University.
