I just received an invitation to join the Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society. Is anybody else a member? What are the benefits of becoming a member? Thanks in advance!
I sent them an email back asking about how distance students could/ would go through the initiation process. I can't make it b/c I'm in a different time zone. Anyway, I haven't heard anything back, just yet.
Keep us posted as to what you find out!
I sent a message too!
I included, "I live in Oregon and will not be able to attend the mandatory meeting. I hope the society will consider how to contact online students without posting these stipulations."
I'll let you know if I get a reply.
They offered me membership last year and I accepted because I tend to do those sorts of things. KDPi is the honor society for education. It is a discipline specific honor society for students who have a certain GPA. Honor societies are good to fill a spot on a resume or job application. That is what you get out of it unless you choose to volunteer your time to do more. It is a US nationally recognized honor society so having membership in it communicates you met their standard for admission.
P.S. Congratulations to everybody who was offered admission!
I also sent an email asking about long distance students becoming members. I would love to be a member. I will also pass along anything that I hear.
I asked about the honor society for distance ed students last semester and was assured it would be no problem to join. I emailed the president back and said I wanted to join and gave her my contact info. She never responded again. I know there is a "service project" requirement and a requirement to attend a certain amount of meetings. I'm not sure how they handle that for distance students either. I would be interested in joining still, but I have no other information at this time.
I heard back from Rachel Rodgers, the chapter president. She said she has been busy with her internship but sent me this:
Sarah, I am not able to open the link to apply. Can you post the link here? Thank you.
Thank you for your responses! I got a response from somebody as well and they said it is possible to join. I did a little bit of research and since I was invited to join anohter honor society (Phi Kappa Phi), I wanted to see which one should I choose and what are the benefits, etc. It seems like many students end up in those "honor societies" in the US - if they pay the membership and then renew each year. So, is it really that good for the resume if the membership is not that hard to get? The other honor society claims it is by invitation only and it is only for the top 10% of students - I wonder how many of the top 10% are there? If it is only based on the GPA, is it worth to "buy" the membership just for the sake of writing it on the resume? I'm not planning to get any more degrees at this time, so the other benefit they offer (scholarships) is not really interesting for me. I'm an international student and at my country we don't have any honor societies. Therefore, I would love to hear your opinions. Thanks a lot! Michaela
